The Other Seat

The mentorship story, from the other side.

The Ordinary Hours told the chief's story. But there's another voice in that rig.

The Story

The Other Seat follows Sam, a medic navigating the early years of a career in EMS. It's the same profession seen from the other side of the mentorship relationship. The moments that build trust. The silences that erode it. The question every new provider carries but rarely asks out loud: do I belong here?

Sam is early in a career that already feels heavier than expected. Not because of the calls. Because of everything in between. The crew dynamics nobody warned about. The unspoken rules that determine who gets taught and who gets ignored. The slow realization that belonging isn't guaranteed. It has to be earned, and sometimes fought for.

The Other Seat is the companion to The Ordinary Hours. Same profession. Same ordinary hours. A completely different view of what mentorship looks like when you're the one in the other seat.

Who This Book Is For

New EMTs and paramedics who want to see their own experience reflected honestly. FTOs and preceptors who want to understand what their trainees actually think and feel. Experienced providers who've forgotten what the first year is like. Educators who want a text that speaks to students in their own voice.

And anyone who read The Ordinary Hours and wants to hear the other side of the conversation.

One conversation. Two voices.

One book for the leader. One for the learner. Because mentorship is a conversation, not a lecture.
